Karen Giles named Interim Executive Director

Interlakes Area United Way (IAUW) is pleased to announce the appointment of Karen Giles as Interim Executive Director, effective May 1.

Giles brings more than 30 years of experience in education through her long-standing service with the Madison School District as a school counselor.

Since retiring in 2022, she has remained engaged in the community as a substitute teacher and office professional. She’s also an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, serving as Deacon of Services and Sacraments and participating in music and worship groups.

Giles succeeds Melissa Dougan, who served as executive director from 2022 to 2025. The IAUW Board extends its sincere thanks to Melissa for her leadership and dedicated service.

Giles will serve in this interim capacity as the board evaluates future leadership plans.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with people and staying involved in our community,” she shared. “United Way does so much to support families and children—it’s the perfect opportunity for me to continue serving in a meaningful way.”

Board Chair Lori Gustaf added, “Karen’s deep commitment to children and families makes her a natural fit for this role. We’re excited to have her leadership.”

Giles and her husband, Chris, have four grown children—Jacob, Josh, Jessi, and Jenni—and are looking forward to two family weddings in the coming year.
