50 kids get healthier smiles from delta dental visit

Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership (ICAP) hosted Delta Dental of South Dakota’s mobile dental truck August 10-13, bringing essential dental care to children and young adults who may otherwise face barriers to treatment.

During the four-day visit, 50 patients ages 0-21 received a total of $29,035 in dental services. Care provided included exams, cleanings, sealants, crowns, cavity fillings and more.

The visit was made possible through a partnership between ICAP, Interlakes Area United Way (IAUW) and Delta Dental of South Dakota.

“A healthy community starts with access to basic healthcare,” said IAUW Executive Director Karen Giles. “By sponsoring the Delta Dental Mobile Program, we’re helping remove barriers that prevent children from receiving the dental care they need to grow, learn and thrive.”

Good oral health plays a vital role in a child’s overall well-being. Dental pain can affect a child’s ability to eat, sleep, concentrate in school, and participate in everyday activities. Yet many South Dakota children do not receive regular dental care due to financial challenges, lack of insurance, or difficulty accessing appointments.

The Delta Dental Mobile Program helps address those barriers by bringing dental services directly to underserved communities. Since 2004, Delta Dental’s two mobile dental trucks have visited 89 communities across South Dakota, providing more than $32 million in dental care to over 52,800 patients.

IAUW sponsors Delta Dental truck visits in Madison and Flandreau as part of its commitment to improving access to health services and building healthier communities.
